Moment Brazilian lawmaker is assassinated while talking to family outside his home
A disturbing video showed the moment a councilor was shot dead outside his home in Brazil.
Marcos de Araujo, 57, and a woman stood with their backs turned to the killers and were talking to his mother-in-law, Marina Maia, 75, when two gunmen ran forward and opened fire on Thursday evening.
The lawmaker was shot at least four times by one of the attackers as the woman sitting next to him and carrying a dog took cover.
The attacker’s accomplice ran over and fired several shots at the Araujo, while Maia remained in her seat and covered her head from the flying bullets.
De Araujo, who was shot nine times, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Maia was shot in the buttocks and back. She was rushed to a local hospital. Her medical condition is unknown.
The suspects fled on a motorcycle and were still on the run Friday morning.
De Araujo was born in the northeastern city of Tabuleiro do Norte and was re-elected to a fourth term on the city council in October.
