Moment an irate Ryanair passenger rips the wheels off his hand luggage to avoid ‘rip off’ €70 extra baggage fee – prompting cheers from fellow passengers

A traveler avoids Ryanair’s excess baggage charges by pulling the wheels off his carrier bag.

The Spaniard was told he would have to pay an extra 70 euros to take the battered suitcase on board – more than the cost of his flight and more than double the price he paid for the travel bag ten years ago.

His new solution, with the help of a friend, was to pull the wheels out one by one so that they would fit in the Ryanair sizer and he could take them on board at no extra cost.

Fellow passengers watching laughed as he joked, “Imagine if it doesn’t fit after this,” as he worked up a sweat.

He received an initial round of applause when he removed the last of the four wheels and a second louder ovation when a witness shouted, with running commentary, “It’s in,” as he confirmed it now met Ryanair luggage dimensions.

The bizarre sequence of events took place at Palma airport ahead of a Ryanair flight to Malaga.

The two travelers, identified only as Daniel and David, were returning to the Costa del Sol after spending a few days with friends in Mallorca.

Daniel, the owner of the business, said: ‘I told Ryanair 10 years ago that it cost me €30 and I wouldn’t pay the €70 they asked me, so I decided to break the case.

“It would have cost me more to check the case than I would have spent on the flight.”

Jackets with lots of pockets have previously been put forward as a way to reduce airline excess baggage charges.

One overcoat first advertised in 2017 boasted that it could store up to 15kg of luggage in its hidden pockets.

An article from the time said: ‘There are fourteen different compartments where you can store laptops, cameras and even shoes without annoying flight attendants noticing before you board.’

Last year it emerged that TikTokers were trying to avoid extra baggage fees by wearing fishing vests to the airport.

When journalist Bobbi Hadgraft tweeted a photo of black cargo trousers with pockets all over the front and tagged Ryanair, the budget airline responded with a screenshot of the same Marc Jacques Burton designer trousers, which retailed for £1,280 on the website.

It added in a joke alongside the snapshot: ‘£1,280? Just pay for a bag, Bobbi.”
