Kaylee Opatich from Boston, Massachusetts, took to TikTok to describe how she keeps 1-year-old Grayson occupied longer during playtime
In her original clip, Kaylee spun around her house to show the organization system in action as she swapped out one toy for another.
She then explained in the caption, ‘I’ve been doing this since he was a few months old and I swear by it.
‘He likes to play independently and the toy exchange keeps him interested in the toys we have.
‘I have a big box of extra toys to choose from, but usually I just put them in a different spot and it works.
‘We do that with our books too and he likes to read the “new” books that I publish.’
Due to the high level of interest in the technique, the mother posted a follow-up video documenting her step-by-step tutorial.
“First I put away the things I want to rotate and keep the things he actually still uses,” she explains.
‘I find it easier to start with the books, so I’ll take them all out and put them in the [holding] trash can. We have a trash can full of books that we like to look through.’
Kaylee said that if she notices Grayson not playing with part of his toy collection, she will switch them out to encourage him to interact.
While looking at the rest of the collection she shared: ‘For the shelves, I just take them all off and replace them with the stuff we have left over in the drawer.’
She explained that some toys stay the same, but most get a makeover about every 30 days.
“There’s really no scientific basis behind it, it’s just what I think he does in another field.”
Kaylee has since shared with Newsweek: ‘We live in a small house in Boston, so we don’t have a lot of space and the kids collect a lot of stuff.
“We also have a very generous family that blesses us with gifts. We try to keep it as minimal as possible and ask for small toys, but then my dad says, ‘Here’s a big dinosaur,’ or something like that, and we don’t want to limit that.
“Giving them just a few toys really keeps their attention and helps them focus, rather than jumping from toy to toy because they’re overstimulated.”
The devoted mother, who is currently pregnant with baby number two, shared how she maintains a ‘monthly toy rotation’ to keep things fresh
She called the monthly routine “fairly easy to manage.”
Kaylee explained, “Honestly, it takes me about 30 minutes now that I’ve got a process down. I think it’s best for us to do it every four to six weeks.”
Not only does Kaylee rotate his toys, she also changes the layout of his room.
The devoted mother told the outlet, “The visual part is also really important for younger kids. It piques their interest a little bit more.
‘In the beginning I always think, “I don’t want to not do this,” but you see the reward…
“What I do may not work for everyone, but if it works for a few people, if it makes their lives easier and more fun, then I think that’s great. Just have fun with it.”
