Mom recounts horror after son, 16, almost died when his cross necklace electrocuted him ‘like a hot coil’ in a freak accident leaving his neck with scorch marks

A distraught mother revealed how her teenage son almost died after his religious cross necklace electrocuted him ‘like a hot coil’ in a freak accident that left the jewelery seared into his flesh.

Danielle Davis, 38, woke up the night of April 30 to a piercing scream coming from her son Rayce Ogdahl’s room.

The mother-of-six went to investigate before seeing the horrific sight of her 16-year-old son covered in ‘scorched burns’ on his neck.

Rayce told his mother that he had been electrocuted by his own chain after the cross chain came into contact with an exposed end of a plug.

Shocking photos show Rayce’s neck and collarbone charred black and the imprint of his chain scorched onto his red, raw skin.

After ripping the chain from his neck, the cross and necklace left a burning three-inch hole in Rayce’s mattress.

The teen was rushed to the burn unit at Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit to help treat his injuries.

Danielle, who lives in Yukon, Oklahoma, feels lucky not to have lost her son that night – and urges others to remain vigilant of electrical cords, wires and plugs.

The mother said: ‘It was a normal night and we had only been asleep for about an hour when we first heard a noise and then heard shouting from Rayce’s room. We thought maybe he was playing a video game and getting frustrated.

‘Then I heard him call ‘mommy’ and my son was standing in the hallway. He said, ‘I’ve been electrocuted. It was my chain’. There were scorching necks around his neck.

‘And the smell was terrible. The whole house smelled of burnt hair, skins and electrical burns. We started calling 911 for an ambulance.”

Danielle said her son explained he was in bed before turning to get comfortable when he heard something fall off the bed.

He wanted to make sure his phone was still charging so his alarm would go off the next day for school, but as he leaned over the edge, nothing could prepare him for the horror accident that was about to occur.

“He said he leaned out of bed and when he did, the cross chain around his neck made contact with the prongs of an extension cord plug that were barely visible,” Danielle continued.

‘He said he was fully conscious throughout the whole thing and was aware he was being electrocuted. Since everything was metal, it made a complete circuit around his neck. It was like a hot coil.

“And he has burns on his hands from trying to rip the chain around his neck. It was a thick, heavy chain.

‘The funny thing was that during the electrocution part of his chain was welded to the charger. And the cross pendant on the chain melted two inches into the mattress through the sheets of his bed.

“He said this all happened within seconds and he could visibly see sparks coming from his neck. He told me his whole body ached and he thought he was going to die.”

Rayce was rushed to hospital after the incident, where doctors told the family he had ‘put through enough enhancers to kill him’ – and monitored his heart’s function over the next few days.

The teen suffered second, third and fourth degree burns and will be scarred for life as a result of the freak accident.

Danielle, a stay-at-home mom, said, “You can see the pattern of the chain on his neck. It has left an important mark.

‘He has a lot of scars. They talk about doing a skin graft, but Rayce doesn’t want that unless it’s medically necessary.

‘Almost his entire neck is covered in scars. It runs from his chin to his collarbone. The incident has certainly made Rayce a lot more self-confident. It was very eye-opening.

‘We are so grateful that he is doing well. He could have easily died that night. It was amazing that he was still conscious and could still warn us. It would have been a different story.

“When it comes to your phone, there isn’t a text or notification important enough to warrant having your phone on the bed.” Anything can happen and Rayce is proof of that.

‘Watch your cords and I advise everyone not to use extension cords at all.’
