- The unnamed mother faced angry backlash after taking to Reddit
- She shared the heartbreaking message her 14-year-old son sent her
- It begged her to “get healthy” and “protect” him from his “abusive” father
A mother faced a wave of backlash after her teenage son begged her to ‘quit smoking’ and she searched the internet for advice.
The unnamed mother took to Reddit to explain the unexpected situation where her 14-year-old child sent her a text begging her to “get healthy.”
Despite the heartbreaking message, the mother was still not convinced she should give up the bad habit and asked strangers on social media for her advice.
Her son called on his mother to “get off the couch” and be a better parent in the lengthy text.
In the AITA_WIBTA_PUBLIC subreddit she wondered if she was wrong for continuing to inhale nicotine.

The post was captioned: ”Am I the asshole for destroying my body so much that my 14 year old sent me this?’
She explained: ‘Having survived the abuse against me and the children, I seem to have given myself some bad habits that I used to cope, but for too long now.
“I know I’ll probably be the asshole if I keep smoking. But am I still the hole if I vape instead? I know I’m an asshole if I don’t get off the couch, but am I still an asshole if I only go to the gym once a week? Like what’s the line [between] protect the children, but also protect me.’
The mother of two then shared the message her son sent her in the mail.
He said, “Mom, I’m sorry I got mean. You told me to always share my feelings, so here goes.”
The teenager then revealed that he had learned at school that day about the devastating effects of smoking, adding that while he will be ‘older’ when she gets ‘cancer’, it is ‘not great’.

“She said smoking also means you can’t fight infections as well – as if if we got COVID again you’d be more likely to die from it. So on top of your cholesterol [issues]’, which you talk about all the time but don’t do anything to solve it, it’s like you’re asking for it,’ he said, wondering what he and his unnamed brother were ‘supposed to do’.
The teenager pulled a few feathers when he revealed he didn’t know how he would keep his “abusive” father at bay if his mother died.
He added, “Do you remember the last thing Dad said to me? [He said]“I’ll come back for him when she dies.” And you know he will come [my brother]. [He won’t] Come get me, because I’m old enough to remember what he did to us.
“You always tell me to make sure I keep Dad away from my brother if anything happens to you. You always say you’ll do anything to protect him from us.
“But now it feels like you’ll do anything to protect us, short of being healthy enough not to die young.”
The boy continued to beg his mother, claiming that if she died, she would give his father exactly what he wanted.
“I’m sorry, Mom, but it feels like your choices are only helping Dad kill you all these years later by accelerating what he waits for every day,” he said.
At the end of the text message, he assured his mother that he loved her and begged her for help.
He added: “I hope you understand what I’m trying to say, please don’t be angry. I love you.’
People on the internet flooded the comments section, criticizing the mother for seeking help on the internet instead of listening to her son.
One person said: ‘Your child just wants to be loved for a long time, they clearly care about you and it’s not out of malice. His concern is not only for you, but for themselves as well, as they apparently don’t want anything to do with your ex.’

Someone else wrote: ‘I’m sorry, but if this text message doesn’t solve the problem, nothing strangers say on Reddit will.
“Please go to therapy, this is more than Reddit’s salary.”
Another user added, “It’s honestly so damn sad that this kid is begging his mom to be healthy for him and she’s asking Reddit if she should.”
One user commented: ‘Can you hear yourself? Your child is begging you to do your best for him and his brother, and you want to know what is the minimum you can do to avoid being considered an asshole?”
