Mom, 28, dies after surgeon ‘gave her liposuction without her consent’

A mother of one has died from complications she suffered following a series of cosmetic surgeries that she reportedly never consented to by a plastic surgeon in the Dominican Republic.

Pamela Almanzar, 28, trusted the well-known Dr. Edgar Contreras underwent breast reduction surgery on December 17 at Arroyo Hondo Diagnostic Medical Center.

Leading up to the surgery, Contreras convinced Almanzar to have a tummy tuck and other procedures to remove excess fat, Almanzar’s girlfriend, Dahiana Ymaya, told the Dominican newspaper Hoy.

Almanzar went ahead with the breast reduction procedure and found out through a hospital employee that Contreras also performed liposuction on her groin, arms and legs without her consent.

Almanzar revealed to her friend, Yomaris Amezquita, that she had “fainted” and received “two pints of blood,” according to WhatsApp text messages obtained by the Dominican newspaper Hoy.

“He addressed many things that were not in the plans,” Almanzar wrote.

She shared a photo of her breasts and told her friend: “I hope they don’t grow on me.”

She visited the hospital on December 23 and was told by medical staff that she was doing well, despite difficulty breathing and pain after surgery.

Her condition deteriorated on Friday, resulting in an emergency visit to hospital, where she died around 2 p.m.

“Pamela didn’t need anything, she was perfect, but she wasn’t satisfied,” Ymaya said. “She wanted changes, she always wanted to be fantastic.”

The Ministry of Health announced on Monday that it had launched an investigation and interviewed the cardiologist, anesthesiologist and medical director of the Arroyo Hondo Diagnostic Medical Center.

Deputy Minister José Matos told reporters they are awaiting the results of an autopsy that will determine whether Contreras will be called in for questioning.

“On the pre-procedure evaluation, everything seemed normal,” Matos said. ‘But with every surgical procedure there are consequences that can be immediate or delayed.’

Amezquita told the outlet that Almanzar opted for the surgery after noticing that her physical training and exercise weren’t helping her achieve her goals.

She was surprised she chose to have surgery at Contreras.

Almanzar’s family told CDN television that Contreras had not met the family after the young woman’s death.

Contreras, who has more than 117,000 followers on Instagram, has been accused of malpractice at least ten times as far back as 1998, according to Dominican investigative journalist Nuria Peña.

In 2018, he was sentenced to three years for forging documents in an attempt to take over a medical facility.
