A Florida mother and her two sons were arrested Tuesday after video showed them beating a man in a wheelchair with an iron bar.
Evelyn Rodriguez, 39, Jonathan Gonzalez, 20, and Jason Chavez, 18, are charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and assault on a disabled person.
The incident was captured in a video that showed them beating the victim with a metal pipe outside the victim’s home on Monday evening.
Police said the victim, who remains unidentified, was in his wheelchair on his way home to Lehigh Acres, Florida, when Rodriguez jumped out of a Jeep with an iron bar and began the attack.
In an attempt at self-defense, the victim pulled out a pocket knife, but the assailants exited the vehicle and forcibly restrained him by grabbing his arms and taking turns beating him.

“On November 6, approximately 7:30 p.m., officers responded to the 5000 block of 26th Street SW in Lehigh Acres in reference to a report of a physical disturbance that had just occurred,” Lee County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a message. press release.
‘Officers observed the wheelchair-bound victim outside his home with apparent injuries to his hands, knees and upper body.’
Police said Rodriguez and Gonzalez were struck by the victim’s knife. All parties suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation.
Following the arrests, Rodriguez’s daughter came forward with her side of the story, claiming that the three people arrested were in fact victims defending themselves, reported by Winknieuws.

A surveillance camera captured the incident from a different angle
“I just know he would come over every now and then and stalk my mother,” the teenage daughter told the local newspaper.
“He would knock on our door.” She went on to say that the man was not disabled.
‘When he came looking for her, and I saw him. He stood well on his own two feet. He was not disabled or in a wheelchair,” the daughter said.

The daughter said the man in the wheelchair was expecting the confrontation, which could explain why he started recording before the attack happened.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office did not confirm the family’s claims.
“Thanks to a quick and thorough investigation by our detectives, a family of three is behind bars after an unfortunate, violent encounter,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno.
“I will always ensure that the most vulnerable members of this community are protected at all costs. The safety and security of our wonderful residents will always be a top priority.”
