Fans of magpie Molly have expressed concerns about the bird’s health after the animal’s owners posted an ominous message on social media.

The owners of Molly the magpie posted a photoshopped photo on Peggy and Molly’s Instagram account on Sunday, showing the bird and his dog looking into each other’s eyes.

“You will always have a special place in my heart,” the caption read.

The post was flooded with thousands of comments, with account owners Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen asking for answers.

“This is really ominous. Did someone die?” one fan asked.

Another added: ‘It’s not fair to suggest that any of them have died. Please be clear about that. It’s not fair to make us feel sorry and sad.’

Others wanted to know what purpose the strange edit served.

Molly’s owners explained the post in more detail in the caption of another post they made on Tuesday, which shows Molly singing alongside Peggy and their other dog, Ruby.

“These unlikely friends love to bark, play and rest together,” the post read.

Many are wondering how Peggy, Molly and Ruby are doing?

‘They are doing well and have settled back into their daily adventures, but are also still enjoying their time apart.’

Molly was returned to the couple in April after being transferred to the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI).

The bird was separated from its family for 45 days after being seized by officers, who claimed the couple were not allowed to keep a wild bird.

Molly returned home after Ms Wells and Mr Mortensen agreed to a number of conditions, including ‘no continued commercial profit from the bird or its image’.

Despite Tuesday’s update, many people responded to Sunday’s post to ask further questions about it.

“Why would you make it sound like one of them died and why would you photoshop a picture of them together when there are plenty of real pictures,” one man wrote.

Another wrote: ‘I hope this wasn’t a post to increase your engagement.’
