Liverpool welcomed Mohamed Salah back to first-team training for the first time since he suffered a muscle injury during Egypt’s failed Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

The 31-year-old limped off in the closing stages of the group stage last month, with his subsequent recovery plan causing a major stir at home.

It was decided that Salah would undergo his rehabilitation in Kirby, with the plan to return to the country’s camp if the Pharaohs reached the final stages of the competition in Ivory Coast.

As things developed, the seven-time winners exited the tournament – after narrowly making it out of the first round – in the last 16 to DR Congo on penalties.

Salah has continued his recovery with Liverpool, making his first training pitch appearance on Tuesday ahead of the Premier League trip to Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

The forward looked in good spirits as he joined his team-mates who, despite defeat to Arsenal earlier this month, have maintained their bid to secure four trophies in his absence this season.

Salah’s last game for the Reds came in a 4-2 win against Newcastle on New Year’s Day, in which he shone with a brace and an assist.

Since then, Jurgen Klopp’s side have progressed to the Carabao Cup final, after beating Fulham 3-2 over two legs, and securing the FA Cup fifth round with wins against the Gunners and Norwich .

Their league form was also impressive with three wins, although they did suffer an embarrassing 3-1 defeat to Mikel Arteta’s side which reduced their lead over the North Londoners and Manchester City to two points.

Pep Guardiola’s team does have a game in hand on the Merseyside club. Yet the likes of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and especially Diogo Jota have persevered in his absence, with the Portuguese striker finding the net five times while Salah was away.

Reds fans will be eagerly awaiting news on whether their star player will start against the Bees, but they can rest assured that he will likely feature in one way or another.
