Egypt has called Mohamed Salah for a tournament this month despite a request from Liverpool to rest the forward.

The 31-year-old forward missed Saturday’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest due to a hamstring injury.

He suffered the injury while playing for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations in January, but the forward returned to action from the bench in the 4-1 win over Brentford last month.

However, in that game he suffered the injury again and missed Liverpool’s last four games.

On Friday, Klopp confirmed that Salah can resume training next week, which would put him in contention against City next Sunday.

“I don’t think Mo is too far off, but he won’t feature (at Forest),” Klopp said. “We have to go from there. Touch and go, unfortunately that will remain the case for Mo for a while.

“But I think it’s possible anytime next week. So he’s definitely on his way back, but he’s not there yet.”

And with the Reds still chasing a quadruple goal, they asked the Egyptian Football Association to rest him during the upcoming international break.

“We have already received a letter from Liverpool to exempt Mohamed Salah from the upcoming camp due to his injury,” said a statement from the Egyptian Football Association.

“We sent the name Mohamed Salah a few days ago to the professional players we ask to include in the next camp.

“It is our right to include any professional player as long as it is at the time of the international schedule, and the matter of whether he should be included or not lies in the hands of the national team coaching staff, led by Hossam Hassan.

‘It is still too early to decide on this matter, and if Mohamed Salah plays a match in the time before the start of the camp, we will adhere to his inclusion and he will be examined and his readiness will be determined by the camp’s medical staff. Egyptian National Team.”
