Moana 2 sails to the top of the box office in record breaking $221M weekend surpassing Wicked and Gladiator II
Moana 2 reached the top of the box office over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, following the trend set on Wednesday’s release date and again on Black Friday.
The highly anticipated animated adventure featuring the voices of Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson broke the previous five-day record set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie during Easter weekend 2023 and the former Thanksgiving record of 2019’s Frozen 2. , with Box Office Mojo reported that the film grossed $221 million domestically over the five-day weekend.
Internationally, the musical about a young woman chosen by the ocean to break a curse on her home island grossed another $165.3 million for a worldwide total of $386.3 million and hit number one everywhere but in China.
“Moana 2 far exceeded our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that Moana has become,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said in a statement on Sunday.
“We are fortunate to have an incredibly talented and hardworking creative team at Disney Animation who have brought this new adventure to life, along with our incredible stars Auli’i and Dwayne and great new music,” he said.
“This is a moment to celebrate, and we are grateful to all the moviegoers and fans who helped make this a record-breaking debut.”

Wicked: Part 1 ultimately fell to second place, but the two-hour, forty-minute musical based on the Tony-winning Broadway show continued to fill theaters.
It also broke some records of its own, becoming the most successful adaptation of a Broadway musical in history, breaking the previous total set by 1978’s Grease.
The theatrical extravaganza starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as enemies Glinda and Elphaba collected $80 million over its usual three-day weekend, but with Wednesday and Thursday added, it filled the coffers for the extended weekend with $117.5 million.
The film is doing well around the world, with a total of almost $359.3 million.
Gladiator II starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington battled for third place and earned around $44 million for the five-day run.
The big-budget film, which cost $350 million to produce and market, has covered its costs and has grossed a total of $111.2 million domestically and $320 million worldwide to date.
Fourth place went to Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans as they hunt to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus, played by JK Simmons.
The holiday adventure grossed nearly $12.9 million over the three-day weekend, with an additional $5.822 million coming from ticket sales on Wednesday and Thursday for a five-day stocking filled with $18.322 million.
