John Matthew Darch’s launched the sickening attack on his wife Brooke when she refused to go to bed when he told her to, the Bunbury District Court in Western Australia heard.

Their children, aged one and three, were in the house as the horrific assault unfolded last year on October 26.

The former couple were drinking by a fire outside their home Darch’s wife dismissed his request to go to bed,.

He then kicked her in the knee, before punching and slapping her while she was on the ground, the West Australian reported.

The MMA fighter then got a jerry can and poured about five litres of petrol over her as she lay just metres from the fire.

The heard he called her a ‘piece of s***’ and ‘crappy mother’ as he repeatedly threated to burn her alive.

She took off her petrol-soaked jumper and ran into the house, but Darch followed her and continued the assault before she managed to escape.

Prosecutor Michael Perrella said his wife’s life had been put at ‘significant’ risk in the attack.

Darch’s lawyer told the court his client was on mind-altering psychotropic medication for mental health problems on the night of the horrendous assault.

Since the attack his victim has been depressed, had trouble sleeping and was triggered by the smell of petrol.

Mr Perrella said she was also affected by fear over what the couple’s children may have seen and heard that night.

‘Through your selfishness and rage against your former partner, you’ve destroyed your family,’ Judge David MacLean said in sentencing Darch.

‘Although you were not charged with offences against your children … you’ve taken away the opportunity in these very important years of having any meaningful relationship with you.

‘You don’t need to be a medical practitioner to understand that you do not mix psychotropic medication with alcohol and you certainly don’t get intoxicated.

‘It demonstrates a reckless disregard for the combination of those two dangerous substances, even though it’s prescribed.

‘It’s not a toy. It’s not a treat. It’s something which if not taken properly is dangerous.’

Darch has been in custody since the night the attack happened, so his two-year and 10-month prison sentence was backdated to October 27 last.

This means he will eligible for parole next year.

A family violence restraining order was also imposed on Darch to protect Brooke, who has since divorced him.
