MLS ROUNDUP: Portland stuns St. Louis but Sounders can only tie at Real Salt Lake…as Eastern Conference leader New England Revolution held 1-1 by Cincinnati

St Louis fell to a surprise 2-1 loss to the Portland Timbers in the Western Conference on Saturday night, but it ended up being a missed opportunity for the Seattle Sounders.

Real Salt Lake held the Sounders to a 0–0 draw, even as Pablo Ruiz was sent off in extra time. The Sounders advanced to the top of the Western Conference through the draw, but are only one point above St. Louis.

Evander and Yimmi Chara scored the goals for Portland, on opposite sides of a Celio Pompeu strike for St. Louis in a narrow defeat.

The top two teams in the Eastern Conference met New England Revolution and FC Cincinnati on Saturday, but the teams could not be split.

They played out a 1-1 draw. Yerson Mosquera put visitor Cincinnati ahead in the first half, before Emmanuel Boateng leveled just before half-time.

But the Sounders couldn’t make the most of it – Real Salt Lake held the team to a 0-0 draw

Elsewhere there was another defeat for Los Angeles Galaxy with Orlando winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Ercan Kara and Facundo Torres.

Toronto defeated New York City 1–0 with a CJ Sapong goal the difference, and crosstown rival New York Red Bulls drew 1–1 against Chicago Fire.

Austin’s game with the San Jose Earthquakes ended 2-2 and there was more misery for Sporting Kansas City as the wait for its first win of the season continued.

Montreal was the team to beat it this week, finishing as a 2-0 winner.

Vancouver and Colorado played 0-0 in the last game of the day. Minnesota and FC Dallas play in the MLS on Sunday night.
