MLB umpire Larry Vanover is still in a hospital in Cleveland after being hit in the head by a home rally pitch.

The 67-year-old Vanover was helped off the field in the fifth inning of yesterday’s Yankees-Guardians game after being drilled by a throw from Cleveland’s Andres Gimenez on a deep hit by New York’s Kyle Higashioka.

In scary scenes, Vanover immediately fell to the ground, and his hat and sunglasses both came off.

Play continued, with the Yankees scoring two runs, before the camera pulled back to Vanover as he gingerly rose to his feet in center field.

According to referee Chris Guccione, Vanover was given a CAT scan and would later be evaluated after getting a “pretty big knot” on the left side of his head.

He was able to walk off the field, with people helping to lead him off, and he was taken to the Cleveland Clinic.

Guccione added that Vanover looked “cohesive” and that he stood up quickly after being knocked to the ground.

“But he did have that glassy look,” Guccione said of Vanover on Wednesday. “Maybe he’ll stay in the hospital for the rest of the night. I’m glad he could walk (and that) he could go to the hospital.

“That was scary. Very hard to concentrate afterwards after seeing a colleague get hit. But they gave me updates and I was like, ‘Okay. He is good. He’s in safe hands.’ So we went on.’

After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone wished Vanover the best in his recovery – even after Vanover sent him off following a controversial review.

“I hope he’s okay,” Boone said. “That looked pretty scary. He was smoked pretty well.’

According to the AP, MLB doctors must clear Vanover before he can return to work. He was scheduled to play a game between the Phillies and Reds in Cincinnati, but he was replaced for that game.
