Milwaukee Brewers rookie reliever Gus Varland was blasted on the right hand and then on his jaw with a vicious line drive from Manny Machado.

The 105.1 mph liner forced Verland to abandon Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

The ball went from Varland to Willy Adames, Brewer’s shortstop, who threw out Machado.

Varland fell to the floor in scary scenes during the bottom of the eighth inning, the sheer force knocking him down.

He sat up dizzily and dropped his glove as two teammates and a trainer ran towards him.

He was helped to his knees as he was attended to before being helped off the field. X-rays were negative and Varland said he felt fine.

“I’m more angry with that slider location,” Varland said after the game. “It felt right out of my hand, it just didn’t get there. It came back to me, hit my hand and my chin and my left forearm.

“I was just a little disappointed. However, I felt fine. I felt like I could have continued, but I think that’s the adrenaline talking there.’

“Don’t hang your sliders mid-center. Lesson learned. I’m just thankful that I’m okay.”

It was Varland’s sixth appearance this season. San Diego went on to win the game 10-3.

The Pads broke their three-game losing streak behind Jake Cronenworth’s pair of two-run home runs. The infielder also finished with six RBI’s.
