MKR contestant who works as a butcher infuriates viewers with the way he cooks steak: ‘You twit’

My Kitchen Rules viewers took to social media to express their outrage and concern over the way Queensland contestants Danny and Sonia served their steak on Monday night.

During the episode, the brother and sister hosted their Instant Restaurant, The Broasis, with the aim of promoting local produce.

Despite the relaxed, pub-like atmosphere, their efforts failed and they finished bottom of the standings with a score of 56 out of 110.

Danny, a butcher by trade, ignored Judge Colin Fassnidge’s advice on how to sear his steak.

The evening’s main course, a filet mignon with garlic shrimp, topped with beer-battered wedges and broccoli salad with bacon, received scathing reviews from the jury, the other contestants and the viewers.

Instead of searing the steak first, Danny put the best piece of meat directly into the oven, which resulted in a less than optimal texture.

Manu Feildel in particular was critical, describing the steak as a ‘wet piece of cardboard’.

Colin agreed, saying, “You tried to give us too much and it backfired.”

Filet mignon is considered one of the most tender and mild cuts of steak and is therefore a favorite among steak lovers.

Danny was visibly disappointed in his efforts and said he felt like he had let his sister down.

“He didn’t have to come with me (on MKR), and he did,” Sonia tried to reassure him. “That will always be important.”

The jury and the other participants were stunned by the misfortune of the charming team.

“I feel for Danny and Sonia but they should have taken Colin’s advice,” one fan wrote on X.

“The food is ruined,” another fan wrote on Instagram.

‘Couldn’t even cook a steak and arrogantly ignored the chef’s advice. Nope. Goodbye,’ said another.

‘Old buddy on #MKR is going to put the filet mignon straight in the oven without searing the steaks. He can’t be serious. What a disaster,’ yet another viewer joined in the conversation.

‘Danny and Sonia have put their heart and soul into their meals. It’s awful for them, but let’s see what the next two nights bring!’ wrote one hopeful fan of the pair.

“I couldn’t eat that steak – tasted like an old boot. Raw or nothing. Danny, what an idiot. Colin tried to tell you, just like your sister. So stubborn,” was another brutal feedback.

‘That’s what happens when you ignore a judge’s advice and choose to follow your own cooking technique… Ah, Danny and Sonia. Nice hospitality, but that’s why you’re at the bottom,’ said another.

Other steak lovers said they were surprised that Danny, a butcher, didn’t know how to prepare filet mignon — with or without advice.

‘You idiot Danny – Jesus, you’re such a butcher, mate. Even I know you have to sear them first. And expensive meat too – you idiot,’ sneered a critical viewer.

“I like these guys. I can’t believe a butcher doesn’t know how to properly prepare a Fillet Minion. [sic]“And that he ignored Collins’ advice,” someone else added.

“As a butcher he should have some idea how to cook a good steak,” said another viewer. “I like these two and I hope the dessert tastes as good as it looks.”

Meanwhile, the much-loved duo’s main course, Townsville Mud Crab with Mango Chilli Dip, was praised by the judges for its execution of the theme ‘Australia on a plate’.

The reaction to Danny’s angle grinder method of cracking open the crab shells was well-received on the show for the fresh, sweet meat, but drew outrage from animal rights activists online.

However, Colin said the mango chili sauce masked the natural flavor of the meat.

The last dish, the Espresso Martini Trifle, was also not a success, because the dessert did not harden. As a result, Danny and Sonia were still at the bottom of the rankings and threatened to be eliminated.

This comes after the 2024 series of the home cooking show got off to a rocky start for some viewers, with some complaining that the show felt “scripted”.

“I’m so done with the fake candidates talking to the camera but it was probably recorded days later. So unnecessary,” one person wrote.

‘Have I just come to the wrong show? This is scripted Married at First Sight b***hiness presented as a cooking show,’ said another.

Another wrote: ‘I was really hoping the reboot of this show wouldn’t have a good guy and a bad guy. It’s so scripted and fake. Take a lesson from MasterChef and just cook.’

Another posted: ‘Suddenly they’re talking about steak crust. Scripted bullshit’ and another added: ‘This is so boring I just can’t do it’.

MKR has faced some teething problems in recent years since its return to television.

In September 2023, the premiere of the 13th season of the cooking competition attracted only 470,000 viewers in major capitals.

MKR didn’t even make the top ten most-watched shows of the night. That’s a far cry from the ratings of a decade ago, when each episode drew over a million viewers.

MKR returned to Channel Seven in 2022, two years after the channel closed.

The show initially drew only 500,000 viewers, but in metropolitan areas, fan numbers continue to decline.

Channel Seven removed My Kitchen Rules: The Rivals from its Sunday evening schedule back in 2020.

The show’s viewing figures, which had plummeted to an all-time low, were reportedly unsustainable and Seven executives were ‘pushing’ to cancel the show in 2020.

A source told the magazine: ‘MKR is no longer safe. There are people in power who are pushing to end the show for good.’

However, in 2022 the series returned, but the ratings lagged.
