Mitch Robinson has thrown down the gauntlet to rival NRL stars after making an impressive start to his boxing career.

The former Brisbane Lions player, 34, appeared at The Gathering on Wednesday night, taking on ex-Tigers star Kayne Pettifer in Adelaide.

Robinson faced a tough task in Pettifer, who had an unblemished record after three fights but showed on the judges’ scorecards his natural ability to win the fight comfortably.

Unlike fellow former football stars Kane Cornes and Dane Swan – who both played down talk of a return to the ring – Robinson is keen to test himself again.

“I don’t know who’s in my weight class in the NRL, but AFL versus NRL would be a good opportunity,” he said.

“I’d love to go up against those guys, I know they’d drop out before us, but they’ve got a punch, so we’ll see.

‘I’m going to have a few beers, I haven’t had one for eight weeks, so I’m in the mood for a beer, that’s for sure.’

Looking back on his performance, Robinson was pleased with how he matched up with Pettifer.

“Kayne has had three fights and three wins, so I was kind of shitting myself in the rooms,” he added.

“But I knew I could hit if I had to, I could fight a little bit or I could do some boxing techniques.”
