Mississippi police officer accused of shooting unarmed 11-year-old in chest suspended without pay

A Mississippi police officer accused of shooting an 11-year-old boy in the chest after calling 911 has been suspended without pay.

Aderrien Murry “came within an inch of losing his life” on Saturday morning when he was reportedly shot in the chest by Sergeant Greg Capers.

He suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs and a ruptured liver from the shooting and was placed on a ventilator at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

The injured boy, now recovering at home after being released from hospital on Wednesday, asked his mother Nakala Murry: “Why did he shoot me? What have I done?

Capers has been suspended pending an investigation, an Indianola Police Department source told Dailymail.com

Aderrien called the police for help and an officer arrived to handle the domestic violence call, according to Nakala and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), which is investigating the shooting.

He was concerned for his mother’s safety when his half-sister’s “furious” father arrived at their home at 4am on Saturday.

Nakala claimed the officer “drawn his gun at the front door and asked the people in the house to come out,” before her son was shot as he rounded the corner of the hallway.

“When he came off the corner, he got shot,” she said Monday at a news conference outside the Indianola City Hall annex.

‘I can’t comprehend why. The same cop who told him to get out of the house. (Aderrien) did, and he was shot.”

Nakala placed her hand over her son’s wound to apply pressure as he “sang gospel songs and prayed as he bled to death.”

She claimed the officer was trying to administer first aid and put his hand over hers to try and stop Aderrien’s bleeding.

The family’s lawyer, Moore, claimed that Aderrien was “on the verge of losing his life.”

He said, ‘It’s not OK for a cop to do this and get away with it.

The mother asked Aderrien to call the police for her daughter’s father.

“He walked out of his room as directed by the police and he was shot.”

Nakala added that the shooting happened “one to two minutes” after the officer asked everyone in the house to come out.

Her daughter and two-year-old nephew were in the house at the time of the shooting.

Nakala’s daughter’s father was arrested during the day on Saturday, but was released, according to Moore, because she had not filed a police report.

When would I have time for that? I was in the hospital with my son,” Nakala said.

During Monday’s emotional press conference, she held up a sign that read, “Your “dear” agent shot my baby.”

She has called for the officer to be fired over the shooting.

Aderrien told his friends and family he was recovering with a post on Facebook, writing, “You guys are doing well.”

“Nobody came to the hospital from the police station,” even four days after Aderrien was shot, Nakala told CNN. “I’m just glad my son is alive.”

Moore said Capers was suspended without pay while an investigation into the shooting is ongoing and shared a photo of the officer on social media.

He said, “Meet Sgt. Greg Capers of the Indianola Police Department. He is the cop who shot 11-year-old unarmed Aderrien Murry after the boy called 911 for help for his mother.

“To this day, neither the officer nor the city have given the family any explanation as to why.”

Moore previously said, “We believe that the city and the officer should be liable to Aderrien Murray for the damage they have caused.”

The lawyer’s request for the release of body camera footage of the incident was rejected due to “an ongoing investigation.”

But he has been told there is video of the shooting from a nearby gas station.

The MBI, which is investigating the shooting, issued a statement this weekend.

It said it is “currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence” and will hand over its findings to the attorney general’s office upon completion of the investigation.
