A Mississippi man running for mayor was fatally shot by his brother-in-law after showing up at his estranged wife's home armed with a gun.
Jason Adam Marshall, 41, was pronounced dead last week at South Central Regional Medical Center after allegedly being shot by Christopher Davis.
Marshall is accused of trespassing on his ex-wife Constance Hope McRae Marshall's property on December 27 in violation of a court order.
According to the Laurel Leader CallDavis then confronted him while armed with an AR-15 rifle and when Marshall grabbed his 9mm pistol, Davis shot him.
Initial investigation findings indicate it was a self-defense killing, Soso Police Chief Jimmy McCoy said.

Chief McCoy told the newspaper that the divorced couple's three young children were home at the time, saying, “It's just a bad situation.”
Although police said the initial investigation ruled the case was self-defense, an investigation into the case remains ongoing.
Marshall's ex-wife reportedly had custody of their children, and he was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation to restore his visitation rights.
Davis lives next door to his sister's home in the town of Soso, which Marshall and his ex-wife had shared and raised their children for 12 years.
According to the Leader Call, the couple filed for divorce in March after a number of disturbing incidents were detailed in the lawsuits earlier this year.
In February of this year, Marshall allegedly loaded a gun and threatened to kill Davis, then threatened suicide in the home on another date.
He also alleged in divorce proceedings that his wife had used illegal drugs, made illegal videos and threatened to take his children out of her home.
After these incidents, he was taken to the Pine Grove Mental Health facility, according to the outlet.
More recently, Marshall was a candidate in a special mayoral election in Soso held on December 18.

In a post on social media, he wrote: “Ladies and gentlemen. today as I stand before you as a candidate for mayor of Soso.
“I am humbled to have the opportunity to speak to you, the people of this beautiful city, and share my vision for a better future.
“I ask for your partnership on this journey toward a more prosperous future. With your faith in me and your active participation, we can ignite a new era of growth, opportunity and harmony in our beloved city.
“Thank you for your time, and let's strive to create a Soso that we can all be proud to call home.”
According to a Leader-Call story, he received a total of five votes out of 137 total.
Chief McCoy added, “He was a good man. He was just struggling, and unfortunately at this point it looks like he just made a big mistake.”
