Search for missing fisherman continues after disturbing discovery on his boat at Windang Island

The search for a missing fisherman continues after a recreational fishing boat was found drifting off the Illawarra coast in NSW on Friday.

Emergency services were called to Windang Island near Warilla at about 6.40pm on Friday after a 4m Quintrex aluminum boat was found empty and floating.

Officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District and Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and PolAir have launched a search for the 61-year-old owner, who police say was alone on the boat.

The search lasted until 1am and resumed at 6am on Saturday, with foot patrols along the coastline carried out overnight without success.

The search resumed at 8am on Sunday, again involving officers from Lake Illawarra PD, Marine Area Command and PolAir, assisted by members of Marine Rescue NSW and Surf Life Saving.

On Saturday, Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Stuart Massey said conditions were challenging.
