Miss Grand International ends in turmoil as the angry Myanmar team rips the third-place crown off the head of their own sobbing 18-year-old contestant and insists she should have won

There were ugly scenes at this year’s Miss Grand International pageant when a member of the Myanmar team angrily ripped the third place crown off their own contestant’s head and insisted she should have finished first instead.

Thae Su Nyein, 18, took second place in the competition in Bangkok, behind Indian winner Rachel Gupta and Filipina Christine Juliane Opiaza.

But instead of celebrating the award, the newcomer was seen sobbing on stage as her team fumed.

Dramatic video shows Miss Grand Myanmar director Htoo Ant Lwin removing her crown and sash in protest as she left the stage.

He shouted at someone filming the scuffle and the tearful Thae was led away, after which a war of words broke out between Htoo and Thai pageant boss Nawat Itsaragrisil.

Ironically, the theme of this year’s competition was intended to be ‘a message of love and peace to the world’.

Thae was later stripped of her second title, with MGI writing in a Facebook post that this was due to “inappropriate behavior and actions that violated various rules.”

In a post in the following days, Thae claimed she was not upset about losing the top title to Gupta.

She also wished Htoo a happy birthday, calling him “a mentor, brother and friend that God gave to her life,” and praised him as a perfect individual who treats others well.

She said they must “keep striving together,” seemingly referencing the recent controversy.

Itsaragrisil later denounced Thae’s actions, saying at a press conference, “What makes (Thae) so delusional?”

“If she wants first place and must have it, I suggest she organizes her own pageant so she can win every title,” he added.

“Someone like you shouldn’t be participating in anything competitive or challenging others. You have to stay in your own imaginary, imaginative, virtual world.’

The row escalated when Htoo accused organizers of demanding payment in exchange for the crown, a claim Nawat dismissed as “ridiculous.”

He in turn cited alleged financial misdeeds by the Myanmar contingent and ordered Htoo a lifetime ban from the franchise for “lack of sportsmanship and business credibility.”

It comes after a beauty pageant at a quiet spa town on a South Pacific island was thrown into a storm after the winning model was controversially stripped of her crown.

As the competition reached its climax on Friday evening, 24-year-old Manshika Prasad was crowned Miss Fiji at the Pearl Resort & Spa after securing her title with a 4-3 vote from the pageant judges.

But it was at this point that things “really got ugly,” according to a judge who witnessed a “conspiracy” unfold before their eyes.
