Miranda Hart reveals early career struggle that sent her back to her temp job – and what kept her going until she found success
Miranda Hart has revealed that she struggled to get her big break and that the early days of her career were not easy, causing her to return to her temp job several times.
Although the beloved comedian is now a household name and known as the queen of her craft, she admitted that she had to work hard and that it took a “long time” to find success.
According to The mirror, in a new interview on the BBC Radio 3 show Private passions on Sunday, the star lifted the lid on her humble beginnings.
She said: ‘Every year I would leave my temp job saying, ‘Now I’m definitely going to get my big break,’ and come back in mid-September asking if the job was still open. It took a long time.’
Revealing what pushed her to keep going, Miranda continued: “One day at the Edinburgh festival I remember saying, ‘If I get one audience of over 20 people and one good review, I’ll keep going.’
‘My first week I had three people and on the last day I had an audience of 21 people and a three-star review in The Scotsman. That kept me going.’

Miranda rose to fame with her self-titled BBC sitcom in 2009 and starred in Call The Midwife as Chummy from 2012 to 2015.
It’s been four years since she last graced the screens, and nine years since she wrapped up her big hit show.
But Miranda, who announced last year that she had recently gotten married, teased a return to her comedy career in October, admitting she had missed “laughter and silliness.”
Appearing on The One Show to promote her new book I Haven’t Been Completely Honest With You, Miranda explained how a chronic illness kept her housebound for years, putting a pause on her incredible career.
The star said that now, after finding fulfillment in writing her book, she is ready to return to TV.
In 2017, it was revealed that Miranda would not be returning to Call The Midwife, citing a busy work schedule as the reason.
But she later revealed during a stand-up gig in London that she was suffering from ‘ill’ health
She was last seen in the 2020 film adaptation of Jane Austin, where she played ‘harmless chatterbox’ Miss Bates.
Meanwhile, a 10th anniversary special of Miranda will also air in 2020, filmed at the London Palladium in 2019 and described by Hart as ‘a celebration (not a new episode)’.

Miranda delighted fans when she revealed in October that she had secretly married at the age of 52.
But the Call The Midwife star gave no details about the wedding or her husband, later named as Richard Fairs, 60, a surveyor.
Now she has revealed that guests broke into song during the ceremony to Sound of Music classic Climb Every Mountain.
Elsewhere on the Radio 3 program Private Passions she said: ‘We sang it at our little wedding. ‘Initially it was: ‘Are we really going to do this? It’s such a boring idea.’
“And as soon as everyone started singing, people got so emotional and really went for it with the beauty of the song.”
She added, “Now it just makes me cry, and also makes me think about the happiest day of my life.”
Miranda admitted that before she met Richard, she had given up on the idea of ever tying the knot.
She said: ‘It reminds me of the recent joy of getting married, which I had more or less given up on the possibility of, and also of the young me I dreamed of. I’ve always been a dreamer. It’s very emotional.’
MailOnline revealed in October that Miranda and Richard had exchanged vows last July in a thousand-year-old church in the picturesque village of Hambledon in Hampshire, attended by only a handful of family and close friends, all of whom were sworn to secrecy.

“Miranda Hart did get married at St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church,” said the 11th-century church’s pastor, the Rev. Elizabeth “Liz” Quinn. “But I’m not going to discuss it because Miranda has released everything she wants to know about her marriage and her wedding in her book. And I won’t go against her wishes.’
Hambledon is known as one of the most beautiful villages in the South Downs National Park and has become the base of Miranda’s close-knit family.
Her parents, retired Royal Navy Commander David Hart Dyke, and mother Diana, bought a beautiful country house there seven years ago, and later her sister Alice, with whom she is very close, moved in next door.
Miranda stunned fans when she announced she had gotten married this summer — after she started dating the mystery man who removed mold from her home in 2020.
It was later revealed he was divorced Richard – after he was pictured picking her up from the Cheltenham Literature Festival in October – 24 hours after she revealed his first name on The Graham Norton Show.
Miranda admitted that she immediately “fell in love” with Richard “there and then” just moments after they met in real life for the first time.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast in December, she said: ‘The way we met was very special. At the beginning of the book [her autobiography] I had a real desire to not be alone anymore and I admitted that to myself.
“It was quite painful because when we long for what we want, it happens at a time when we don’t have it, so it’s a painful time to admit that to yourself. I was in my forties and single.

“And then we met because part of my illness was that I was allergic to mold in my house. You couldn’t write it. I lost my house, I had to leave my house.
She explained that Richard was the project manager who came to arrange the construction works and had to remove the mold.
Miranda said: ‘I was out of the house and a friend arranged it all as I couldn’t be there and we met on the last day of work. I guess I could say we fell in love at that moment.”
She remained tight-lipped about her husband’s identity before it was revealed, referring to him only as “The Boy” or “The Mold Man” in her new book, I Haven’t Been Completely Honest With You.
But she revealed they got engaged in January during a trip to Kew Gardens in west London, after revealing they had ‘fallen hopelessly in love’ with each other.
Miranda hinted lightly at his appearance, describing her new husband as having a “salt-and-pepper gray hair look for a man with delicate features.”
