A young Irish woman had a 'miraculous escape' after leaving a nightclub in the French Alps wearing shorts and a T-shirt and getting lost in sub-zero temperatures.

The 19-year-old, who has not been named, had been drinking heavily during a skiing holiday in the popular holiday resort of Les Deux Alps, police said.

“She was drunk when she left a club around four o'clock on Wednesday morning,” said a local police spokesperson.

'She was only wearing shorts and a T-shirt and had no idea where she was going.'

With temperatures of -1 degrees Celsius, the woman wandered through the mountain forest of Combe de Venosc before managing to call 112 – the number for emergency services in France.

But she could not remember any personal information, including her own phone number, which could not be displayed.

But eventually an operator in Ireland managed to get her father's number, and he was alerted.

This eventually led to police sending the woman a message containing the geolocation app Genloc, which allows authorities to locate lost people when they call.

After GPS beacons pinpointed the woman's position, patrols were sent out and she was found 'hypothermic' in the woods at around 7am, three hours after leaving the nightclub.

Commander Ludovic Saint Bonnet, from the CRS (Republican Security Companies) police unit in the Alps, said: “When we found her, she was suffering from bruises, because she must have fallen trying to find her way back, and she suffered from pain. due to mild hypothermia.

'We can say that she is a miracle, because alone, dressed so little, she could not have withstood the cold for long.

“It was a real relief when the teams found her,” said Commander Saint Bonnet, saying that drunken people had died in the past after “wandering through this part of the mountains.”

Calling for better regulation, Commander Saint Bonnet said: “The fact that we go to nightclubs should not mean that we should forget to dress in accordance with the environment around us.”

The young woman was transported by helicopter to the emergency department of Grenoble University Hospital, where she continued to recover on Thursday.

She was expected to make a full recovery before returning to Ireland.
