A Minnesota student is suing the school after she claims it ignored her cries for help after falling in her apartment, nearly killing her from sepsis.

A lawsuit on behalf of University of Minnesota senior Eve Lizotte claims she called a counselor at the school’s Radius apartment and said she had fallen and couldn’t get up.

Lizotte had recently undergone major knee surgery a month earlier and had developed an infection, she also needed water.

According to the lawsuit, the counselor claimed she knocked on Lizotte’s door but heard no response and left. She lives alone.

Her parents eventually called the police, who found her on the bathroom floor in a pool of blood and with a fever of 106 degrees β€” 16 hours after she first cried out for help.

Lori Peterson, Lizotte’s attorney, said her client called the counselor instead of 911 because she couldn’t think straight and the university’s residence halls are described as having 24/7 staff support.

Students are advised to notify the apartment staff member if they require medical attention.

The incident took place in April 2023, but only came to light during the recent court case. Lizotte remained in the hospital until the end of May.

Lizotte, a communications major, is active on TikTok and showed the aftermath of the incident by captioning a video with, β€œWhen I woke up from my coma and couldn’t remember my mother.”

She claimed she had been delayed in her education by a year and had seen negative effects on both her physical and mental health.

In several of her photos from the months after they were posted on social media, she is wearing a knee brace.

β€œI don’t want this to ever happen to anyone else,” the 22-year-old wrote.

She is suing the school and apartments for an unspecified amount for her pain and suffering, as well as reimbursement for medical expenses.

a GoFundMe started after her fall, saying that Lizotte had to undergo three surgeries to clear her leg and that her knee was so infected that it seeped into her bloodstream.

β€œEve’s mother, Becca, is unable to work while spending every day in Minneapolis to be by Eve’s bedside. Becca is a small business owner who helps people like me stay healthy and strong through personal training,” the page read after Lizotte was found.

Her mother was told at one point that her daughter “might not make it.”

Lizotte has had at least six surgeries since she fell to help remove the infected tissue, her mother said.

The university and an attorney for the Radius Apartments have not responded publicly, they said the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

A response was filed with the court on behalf of the defendants denying the allegations and asking for the case to be dismissed.
