Minneapolis mass shooting: Police officer and two people are killed by gunman as several others are hospitalized

A police officer and two people were killed in a horrific mass shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Thursday.

The dangerous incident broke out in the city’s Whittier neighborhood around 5:30 p.m., when officers responded to shots fired at an apartment complex in the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South.

Minneapolis police said they were “immediately confronted with gunfire” upon arrival.

Police identified the deceased officer as Jamal Mitchell, 28. Another officer was hospitalized and several others were injured.

The unidentified suspect is also dead, authorities said. One of the victims died at the scene, while another suffered catastrophic injuries.

Another person shot is believed to have been an innocent bystander who was shot when officers arrived. The surviving officer’s conditions were not immediately made clear, but they are expected to recover.

This was said by a resident near the accident 5 Eyewitness News that she heard five “loud bangs” go off before she saw people running from a man with a gun.

The woman said she soon realized gunshots were being fired and an army of police officers responded to the area, telling people to stay indoors.

Other witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots. As of 6 p.m., police cordoned off part of the area and asked residents to avoid the scene.
