Powerball winners tell how a spectacular rainbow formed over their mining site before 19 workers won a $53 million draw

  • WA miners who won mega Powerball say they saw a rainbow on their mining site
  • The group of 19 gold prospectors from Kalgoorlie-Boulder won the Powerball record
  • Each miner put in $100 and came out $2.6 million richer from the $53 million profit
  • At 5.30pm on the night of the draw, they saw a rainbow land in their mining pit
  • They were one of three first-division wins with a record $160 million

A group of 19 mining fellows who took home $53.3 million in the nation’s biggest Powerball jackpot say a rainbow formed over their mining site just before their life-changing win.

The Western Australian miners in Kalgoorlie-Boulder spent $100 each on the $160 million Powerball draw in a “spur of the moment” decision to syndicate together for the first time.

The miners saw a rainbow appear over the mining site at 5:30pm on the night of the draw – jokingly ‘that’s our pot of gold’.

The group of 19 miners who took home $53.3 million, in the country’s biggest Powerball jackpot, said a rainbow over their mining site predicted their life-changing win

The group saw the rainbow at 5:30 PM on the night of the draw. “We saw the rainbow land in the pit just behind us and thought ‘that’s our pot of gold for tonight,'” the miners said.

“We saw the rainbow land in the pit right behind us and thought ‘that’s our pot of gold for tonight,'” someone told the Kalgoorlie Miner.

The group originally believed that they had won the Second Division prize before the cardholder proclaimed that they were in fact the winners of the First Division.

“He’s a big joker, so nobody believed him,” the group said.

“It took some persuasion before it started to sink in that we had won.”

The syndicate joined a Sydney western father and a Victorian grandfather as the three prize winners in the $160 million Powerball draw.

THE WINNING REACTION OF THE GOLD MINER

‘Peter’, 54, from the Kalgoorlie-Boulder gold mine, about 600 km west of Perthsaid he and his factory operator colleagues decided to spend $100 each on tickets to last Thursday’s Powerball on a “spur of the moment” decision.

The small group got lucky and won the Division One prize worth $53 million – despite the bleak odds of winning by just one in 134,490,400.

“It was just a one-off because it was a big draw,” Peter told Perth radio station 6PR on weekends.

He said he had checked the numbers earlier in the evening and excitedly told his colleagues that they had won in the second division.

It wasn’t until later that he realized they would win a share of the record-breaking $160 million prize pool in division one.

“I couldn’t believe it, I checked the ticket ten times,” said Peter.

“We just couldn’t believe it. We all put in $100, kind of spontaneous action.’
