Unrealistic demand in $45,000 entry level IT job exposes everything wrong with starting a career in Australia
A bizarre set of requirements for an entry-level IT role has sparked outrage from stunned Australians who claim the company is ‘taking the p***’.
OracleCMS, a leading call center based in Melbourne, recently advertised a C# Junior Developer position, with a salary range of $45,000-$65,000 per year.
The company is looking for an IT graduate with at least a university bachelor’s degree – ‘Master’s preferred’, along with ‘more than three years’ of experience in software development.
Potential applicants are also warned that the job is ‘100 percent on-site’ and comes with a long list of required skills.
‘Are you obsessed with writing clean and readable code and enjoy contributing to programming software that helps customers?’ stated the list posted earlier this month.
‘Join this dynamic team and play a pivotal role in developing B2B management and software applications that are revolutionizing the software world.’
The entry sparked outrage among Aussies when it was shared on Reddit on Sunday.
‘WTF is this vacancy?’ wrote the author.
An IT vacancy in a call center has caused a stir among Aussies
“I don’t understand how they can call a candidate with more than three years of experience and preferably a master’s degree.”
‘What a joke. I would have had at least three to four years of university and three years of real experience, giving me a total of seven years of learning/experience, which would be entry level and an absolute disgrace for a salary.”
The national minimum wage is just under $48,000.
The Professional Employees Award, for IT workers, sets a minimum annual salary of $61,638 for related graduates with a three-year degree.
“This is called a red flag company/taking the p***,” one Australian commented.
Another added sarcastically, “Ah yes, the entry-level developer with three years of team management experience.”
Others wondered whether the company bungled labor market tests to later sponsor a foreign worker.
Young Aussies said the company ‘took the p*** on the requirements for a ‘junior’ role
“They will use this as an excuse to outsource labor offshore or implement AI. They will never find someone ‘suitable’ because the listing is a joke, and someone with a Masters in CS would be a clown to take it,” one person commented.
Another added: ‘Generally speaking, companies simply complete the labor market tests as (a) tick the box and add a two to three year work experience requirement to limit the number of applications they receive, so it doesn’t look looks so bad when they do that ‘I don’t accept applicants,’ said one.
But some debunked that theory, pointing out that the salary for the position is below the $74,150 threshold for temporary skilled migration visa holders.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted OracleCMS for comment.
It comes a month after a major customer data breach earlier this year.
In April, ransomware operator LockBit leaked more than 60 gigabytes of data to the dark web — including phone numbers and call records of more than 50 OracleCMS customers, according to CyberDaily.
It affected more than a dozen Australian municipalities, including the city of Sydney, law firms, aged care providers and others.
In a July update, OracleCMS said the incident response had been completed.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their understanding and patience, and also thank the government agencies who provided guidance and support during our incident response,” a message on the site said.
