Worker dead and another seriously injured at Glencore’s Oaky Creek Coal Mine

A miner has been killed and another is fighting for his life after a serious accident at the scene.

It is understood the two men were working above ground on a conveyor belt at the Oaky Creek Coal Mine in central Queensland when a cable broke and hit them on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased man is said to be in his thirties.

A man in his 20s was airlifted to hospital in Rockhampton with head injuries and multiple fractures. Courier mail reported.

The accident at operator Glencore’s site was confirmed by a spokeswoman for Resources Safety and Health Queensland.

She said it was too early to provide more details about what happened, but said the agency was investigating.”

Oaky Creek Coal is located between the towns of Tieri and Middlemount in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, 90 kilometers northwest of Emerald.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Glencore for comment.

The latest accident adds to a harrowing year for miners in central Queensland.

Bundaberg man John Linwood, 56, died at the Byerwen coal mine, near Glenden west of Mackay in central Queensland, after being crushed under a truck at 1pm on August 24.

The fatal accident occurred in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, where there is a concentration of mining activities

Just three weeks earlier, father-of-five Chris Schloss, 48, died at the same spot when he was struck by a crane.

In January, Luke O’Brien, 27, was fatally injured after being trapped between two vehicles in the fuel bar area at the Saraji mine in Dysart.
