‘It’s Blade Runner 2049’: Millions compare the Northeast to a dystopian movie scene and joke that the air quality is WORSE than cigar smoke as they take the smog of Canadian wildfires in stride

  • Dozens of memes immediately flooded the internet after orange smog blanketed parts of the Northeast
  • The dangerous haze came over from Canada, where more than 400 wildfires are still raging

As millions of people in the Northeast were smothered by a blanket of dangerous smog from hundreds of Canadian wildfires, many were quick to take the situation lightly.

The internet erupted with memes shortly after the thick haze enveloped the famous Big Apple skyline – momentarily making the city the most polluted city in the world.

Many were quick to point out the similarities between the bright orange smog and the landscape of Blade Runner 2049.

The post-apocalyptic film resembled the New York City scenes, with many parallels between the film and the dystopia.

Others then joked that the skyline, which heavily influenced Gotham City in Batman, had really changed in the city.

Another joked that the smoke was a way for the Rattentsaar to finally fulfill their promise to get rid of all rats in the Big Apple.

In an effort to keep the situation light-hearted, experts warn, 24 hours in smog could be as bad as smoking six cigarettes. One even joked that smoking cigars in New York would help improve air quality.

Others photoshopped Godzilla into the hazy orange skyline, joking that the apocalypse was beginning.

But while some tried to take the smog in their stride, many were quick to point out that California faced similar problems last year β€” and mock the Northeast for their response.

A cloud of smoke from the wildfires first descended on New York on Tuesday before thickening during the afternoon, preventing those in Manhattan from seeing the New Jersey skyline across the Hudson River.

According to the National Weather Service, not only were New Yorkers sent indoors, air quality alerts were also introduced in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and the Carolinas.

While some areas, including Indiana and Ohio, saw the smoke clear Wednesday morning, in other regions, such as Pennsylvania and Virginia, the fog will continue for several more days.

As the smoke continued to thicken through Wednesday, the FAA issued emergency shutdowns at New York’s LaGuardia Airport and New Jersey’s Newark Airport due to poor visibility.

Around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, New York briefly set the tone for the worst air pollution in the world, overtaking the Indian capital Delhi.
