Millie Bobby Brown’s New Netflix Movie Damsel Is a Dud – Watch These 3 Great Fantasy Films Instead
Millie Bobby Brown’s latest Netflix venture Lady, in which the Stranger Things’ actor faces a fiery confrontation with a dragon, turns out to be in real distress after early reviews call it a flop. The new fantasy adventure film currently has 48 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which equates to an under-par score of just 58%. There are no audience reviews yet as the film only started streaming on March 8.
From Alissa Wilkinson of The New York Times who says the new Netflix movie is “proof that studios still haven’t realized that a ‘strong female lead’ isn’t enough to make a movie good,” to Kevin Maher of the Times writing “that all moments come without surprise and simply meet expectations”, there is a resounding consensus on this Lady is not as convincing as it could be.
Of course, not everyone entirely agrees, with some praising it for its visually stunning action scenes. But why waste your weekend watching a sub-par fantasy movie on the best streaming service when there are plenty of other highly rated movies to choose from? Here are three top-rated fantasy films by critics now streaming on Netflix.
Everything everywhere at once
This time last year, Everything everywhere at once surprised everyone by taking home seven Oscars. It was one of the biggest Oscar winners of 2023 and if you haven’t seen the A24 film yet, this is your reminder that you absolutely must. This isn’t the first time we’ve recommended readers watch the Multiverse movie – and I’m sure it won’t be the last. It’s a bizarre whirlwind of genres, in which a stressed-out laundromat worker (played by Michelle Yeoh) goes on an adventure full of interdimensional travel. An absolute must see.
Available on Netflix in the US and Australia. For those in the UK, you can rent or buy it on Prime Video, Apple TV Plus and Sky.
Spider-Man: About the Spider-Verse
If you’re a regular Ny Breaking reader, you know that Spider-Man: About the Spider-Verse is one of the rare films we’ve reviewed and awarded an impeccable five stars – and we’re not alone in our praise: it’s getting high scores from critics everywhere. What stands out most about it is its uniquely stunning animation style, which combines computer-generated imagery with hand-drawn 2D elements. It’s a landmark film that has led to a resurgence of creativity across the animator space.
Available on Netflix in the US and UK, and Prime Video or Binge in Australia.
Ready Player One
We don’t judge Ready Player One ranked very highly among Steven Spielberg’s films, ranked from best to worst – and compared to the two previously mentioned films, this one doesn’t have the highest score among critics either – but of all the fantasy films currently streaming on Netflix, it’s one of the best Liked. It’s also easy to see why. A film about a virtual reality world set in a futuristic society with many references to pop culture video games? Don’t mention it. Top marks if you watch it on the Apple Vision Pro this weekend!
Available on Netflix in the US and Australia. For those in the UK, you can rent or buy it on Prime Video, Apple TV Plus and Sky.
