Milk production growth will slow down in FY23 due to several diseases, LS said

Milk production growth slowed to 3.83% last fiscal due to diseases such as Lumpy Skin Disease, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala said, “The annual growth rate of milk production in the country has declined from 5.77% in the year 2021 to 3.83% in the period 2022- 2023. -22.”

Milk production was 230.6 million tons in 2022-23, 222.1 million tons in 2021-22 and 210 million tons in 2020-21.

However, according to the latest statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAOSTAT) of the United Nations, India maintains the position of the largest milk producer in the world.

“Diseases like Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) were the main reason behind slower milk production growth in 2022-2023,” Rupala said.
