Mikel Areta praises David Raya’s ‘impressive’ form amid criticism of the on-loan goalkeeper for yet another error-strewn display against Luton as the Arsenal boss backs his under-fire stopper

Mikel Arteta continued to back David Raya as the Arsenal goalkeeper faced criticism for his latest mistake between the sticks, with the Gunners boss answering questions ahead of his side's visit to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Arsenal take on Aston Villa, who are unbeaten at home in 14 games, breaking their own record set more than a century earlier, after beating Manchester City 1-0 on Wednesday evening.

The Gunners came back from 3-2 down to beat Luton 4-3 in the 97th minute of the match after Raya twice let in soft goals to see the hosts take the lead from 2-1 down.

Raya came to claim the ball from a corner after the break and fluttered under the cross, allowing Elijah Adebayo to head into an empty net.

The Spanish goalkeeper was then at fault for the home side's third as they took the lead for the first time, with Ross Barkley's shot aiming straight at Raya but finding its way under his body and into the back of the net.

However, after facing questions about his under-fire goalkeeper, Arteta remained steadfast in his support for the Spaniard, instead claiming he was not asked about those left out in other positions.

“If you look at his form and what he has achieved since joining us, it is impressive. “I have three great goalkeepers and I am very happy,” he said.

'I have great wingers. Some of them are on the bench, but there are no questions about them.”
