The song was originally released in April 2015, before a remix of the song by Norwegian duo SeeB in July of the same year made it a hit around the world.

Reflecting on the lyrics, the Detroit native Posner provided a verse-by-verse comparison on his account on X.

Introducing the post, he wrote: ‘On my 26th birthday I wrote I Took A Pill in Ibiza… 10 years ago. The song became popular a few years after I wrote it. Yesterday I celebrated my 36th birthday.

“I feel proud when I look at the lyrics and know that NONE of them are true anymore. I have grown into a completely new man…a man I am proud of. Look at this…’

He went on to explain how, although the lyrics of the song give an impression of a person living carefree and enjoying life in Ibiza – one of the most popular party destinations in the world – he has become a completely different man after the age of 36.

Posner directly compared the lyrics to how he feels in his thirties, writing: ’26: I took a pill in Ibiza to show Avicii I was cool and when I finally sobered up I felt 10 years older, but fuck it, it there was something to do

’36: I love myself more than ever, no longer doing things that harm my body, to try to get people to like me’.

Contrasting some of the more melancholic lyrics that reflect on himself as an artist who “doesn’t want to keep singing on that stage”, he said that at the age of 36 he was the “happiest I have ever been in my life and have had’. sustained faith, love and (a joyful) mindset for over a year and I’m not going back.”

Referencing another chorus from the hit single that reads “All I know are sad songs,” Posner now shared that he feels much more comfortable and adept at dealing with his emotions.

He added, “I know sadness and pain very well, I also know how I overcame/overcame it. it is my duty to teach others to do the same. I know sad songs, but I also know songs of redemption, songs of freedom, songs of faith and songs of devotion.”

The artist’s remarkable and inspiring revelation comes after he wrote the song after taking an impromptu trip to Ibiza with Swedish DJ Avicii – who tragically committed suicide in 2018 – after co-writing a song with him.

Explanation of the song via online music encyclopedia Genius, Posner said the trip to Ibiza came after he wrote a song with Avicii in Sweden and decided to follow the DJ to the island he was performing on because he had never been before.

“We were at his show and I was drinking at the time. And I just walked out into the audience to see Avicii gyrating from their point of view,” he said.

Posner explained that he took a pill after a chance encounter with a fan who happened to recognize him as he was moving between the VIP and general admission areas of the venue.

“So I took one, and I’d never done that before, and I felt great. When I came down I felt ten years older,” he recalls.
