Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo insists that the US, and the world, should stop accepting travel from China just after the communist country announced it would ease travel restrictions in the New Year.
He warned that Chinese President Xi Jinping has a plot to infect the world and spread a new variant of COVID-19 after “the whole world has been through hell.”
China, which still has the strictest COVID-19 restrictions, announced last month that it would start allowing travel to and from the country after three years of ‘zero COVID’ policies.
Several countries, including the US, immediately said that Chinese travelers will have to test negative for coronavirus before boarding flights.
“It looks like we could have up to 1 million infected Chinese. Fifty percent of their population travels,” Pompeo told Cats Roundtable host John Catsimatidis in an interview Sunday.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned that China is trying to spread a new variant of COVID-19 by reopening travel out of the country.
“There is no reason why we should allow the Chinese to do this again, send Chinese-infected people all over the world, knowingly infecting people all over the world,” he added.
Pompeo served as Secretary of State under President Donald Trump from April 2018 until the end of his presidency on January 20, 2021. There has been speculation that he is preparing to make a bid for the White House in 2024.
He told Cats Roundtable in his New Year’s Day radio interview that Xi must “take responsibility” for every death in the world that resulted from COVID-19.
“Xi got away with it once,” Pomepoe said. I’m sorry she was not held responsible. We should still do that for the 6 million people who died between spring 2020 and today.”
But he’s doing it again. Like spring 2020 [when] he sent people all over the world who he knew were infected, he is doing the same thing again,” lamented the former head of the State Department.
‘It’s going to infect millions more. We shouldn’t let that happen.
World leaders from the US, Australia, Canada and the UK announced new rules over the past week that will require any passenger from China to test negative for coronavirus before boarding a plane to travel to their respective countries.
Some countries feel that pre-departure testing is necessary from China due to the international community’s lack of confidence in Chinese infection data and vaccine protection.
Pompeo warned that the world could soon see images similar to those that emerged in Milan, Italy, in 2020, when COVID-19 first emerged and began to spread across Europe and the world.
However, some experts have downplayed the threat another variant could actually cause worldwide and the impact it could have.
A man who helped develop the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine said “trying to ban a virus” through travel restrictions “has shown it doesn’t work very well.”
“Keep calm, we’ve got this covered,” said Professor Calum Semple, an expert in outbreak medicine at the University of Liverpool.
