- The 55-year-old called time for his duties as a referee on the pitch a year ago
- And has now apparently decided to leave English football after 28 years
Mike Dean is leaving the Premier League after deciding to leave the refereeing organization PGMOL, marking the end of an era for the match official.
Dean, 55, spent last season as VAR following his high-profile career as a referee in England’s elite league. He also spent time coaching match officials over the course of the latter campaign.
Dean, who will announce his future in due course, started as a referee in 1985 and rose to the top of the referee rankings.
He was promoted to the Premier League in the year 2000 and went on to captain more than 550 games.
In a statement, the Premier League refereeing body said: “PGMOL would like to put on paper the recognition of Mike’s achievements and his huge contribution to the referees and the game as a whole.”
