Left-wing commentator under fire over three-word response to Australia’s message of support to Donald Trump: ‘This is a low blow’
A left-wing Australian commentator has been widely criticised for his “reckless” response to news that former US President Donald Trump had been shot in a failed assassination attempt.
Australia’s ambassador to the United States, Kevin Rudd, issued a statement on Sunday after it emerged that Trump had been shot during a campaign rally on Saturday evening local time.
“All Australians are shocked by the attack on former President Donald Trump at his campaign rally in Pennsylvania tonight,” Rudd wrote.
“Violence has no place in our democracies. It is a relief to see that President Trump is safe. Our thoughts are with him and his family.”
Former radio presenter Mike Carlton responded bluntly to Rudd’s message: ‘I didn’t think so…’
Carlton’s audience, however, was less than impressed with his choice of words. Even Trump’s critics criticized the Australian’s apparent disregard for safety.
“Sometimes it’s better to keep things to yourself,” one person wrote.
“You are a disgrace,” said another.

“You are the problem and the sooner we get rid of you the better,” wrote another.
A fourth said: ‘Imagine being such a low life that you celebrate, or shall we say deplore, someone’s safety. What a disappointment that you turned out to be Mike.
‘I don’t like that guy at all, but I would never want to hurt him and I would say he shows more courage than you do behind your keyboard.
“You should be ashamed of yourself, mate.”
However, Carlton refused to show any remorse and continued to stick to his positions.
‘Trump’s shooting has certainly brought out his deranged Australian minions – faceless, insignificant little brats from Woop Woop Creek and the like, hurling abuse at their 20-something followers. What a life,’ he wrote.
‘And now you see them go again…’
The gunman behind Saturday’s assassination attempt, which left one bystander dead and two others seriously injured, has now been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Crooks is a 20-year-old registered Republican who donated money to Joe Biden.
He fired at least eight rounds from a rooftop less than 400 feet from where Trump stood onstage in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he spoke to thousands of fans at 6:15 p.m.
Law enforcement sources told CBS News that Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was armed with “an AR-style rifle.”
During the attack, he appeared to be wearing merchandise advertising one of the most popular YouTube channels dedicated to firearms — Demolition Ranch — NBC News reported.
According to public court records from Pennsylvania, Crooks had no criminal history, and authorities say they are still trying to determine the motive behind the shooting.
Mike Carlton was criticized by critics for rejecting Kevin Rudd’s statement, in which he took a tough stance against violence in politics and expressed relief about Trump’s safety.

Trump was bloodied and injured during the assassination attempt. He was seen suddenly grabbing his ear as loud bangs rang out and passed by, then diving to the ground.
The Secret Service gathered around the 45th President of the United States as piercing screams could be heard from the MAGA crowd.
He then stood up, blood streaming down his cheek, raised his fist in the air and defiantly shouted “fight” as the crowd chanted “USA” as he was dragged off the stage and forced into a vehicle.
