Manager Chris Wilder has been pressing for new signings and sees the 27-year old former Leeds star as an ideal replacement for Marcus Tavernier, who left for Bournemouth last week
There he had been a key figure for Valerien Ismael and followed his former boss to the Hawthorns, signing a three year contract.
However, Ismael was sacked in February after seven months in charge and under new manager Steve Bruce so far this season Mowatt has been on the bench.
Boro have asked to take Mowatt on loan and talks are expected to advance this week ahead of their league cup clash with Mowatt’s former club Barnsley.

Meanwhile, Boro forward Uche Ikpeazu is wanted by Turkish club Konyaspor.
Wilder’s side are currently 20th in the Championship after taking just one point from their first two games.
After losing 3-2 against QPR on Saturday, Wilder pleaded for new players to boost their promotion push.
