Microsoft quietly kills popular app — and disappointed fans are calling it ‘the end of an era’

It is a favorite app among aspiring artists.

But Microsoft is quietly shutting down Paint 3D later this year, a leaker has revealed.

The news was first reported by famed leaker ‘phantomofearth’, who spotted a banner in the Paint 3D app.

“Paint 3D now has a banner stating that it will no longer receive updates as of November 4th and that the app is no longer available in the Microsoft Store,” they posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The news did not go down well with fans of the app, with one person even calling it the “end of an era.”

Unlike its predecessor, Paint, the app could create three-dimensional masterpieces that they could explore from any angle.

“Whether you’re an artist or just want to try out some doodling, Paint 3D makes it easy to unleash your creativity and bring your ideas to life,” the Microsoft Store description reads.

Some users are now seeing a banner in the app confirming that the app will be removed soon.

“Paint 3D will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store and will no longer receive updates as of November 4, 2024,” the banner reads.

Several fans responded to phantomofearth’s tweets to express their disappointment over the news.

“It’s a real shame, honestly. They could have integrated it into regular Paint,” one user wrote.

Another added: ‘It’s better than the classic MS Paint, and doesn’t have AI or MS accounts, unlike the new Paint. This is just good, and it should stay.’

And someone joked: ‘Paint was supposed to be replaced by Paint 3D, but now Paint 3D is being replaced by Paint, lol.’

If you already have Paint 3D installed on your PC, chances are the app will continue to work after November 4.

However, from that date onwards it will no longer be possible to download the app from the Microsoft Store and you will no longer receive updates for it.

The news comes shortly after Microsoft confirmed that the Windows 11 Start menu will soon include ads.

According to Microsoft, the ads are intended to help users discover “some of the great apps available.”

In the notes accompanying the update, the company writes: “The Featured section of the Start menu will show some Microsoft Store apps.

“These apps come from a small group of selected developers.”
