Microsoft is still warning eager developers to backup their Dev Drives in the latest Windows update

All the noise around it sudo comes to Windows might have been premature, as the main feature of the latest version of Windows 11 on the Canary and Dev channels seems to be warnings of unrecoverable data loss – or a huge headache for users.

Developer disksFirst introduced in June 2023, its optimized volumes target development and working directories and provide performance improvements of ‘up to 30%’ when building projects.

However, build 26052first released in early February 2024, was said to be the first trace of Dev Drives breaking during a rollback, and remained so until the very end build 26058.

Same developer drive, same developer channel

In software development, Canary and Dev versions invariably refer to advanced releases of a particular application or, here, an operating system. The difference between the two is even smaller in this case, as there are no code differences between the Canary and Dev builds of 26058.

These channels differ from stable releases in that while stable channel releases should be less prone to critical bugs and crashes, they are typically the last to receive new features. For example, it will take a long time for the ‘sudo’ command to appear in a stable Windows release.

So despite the bug, this would ultimately not bother any self-respecting developer who is already aware of the importance of back up to the cloud and to one external hard drive (or three). However, Microsoft has identify the problem on the incessant funnel of hate formerly known as Twitter.

Difficult second build syndrome

The latest Windows build from February 2024 could never match the mind-bending, ‘oh my God’, tsunami of shock that was the sudo reveal, but still packs some nice features.

Users with poor eyesight can now take advantage of a pointer indicator to help locate the cursor, the widget board sees improvements to the user interface (UI) such as a navigation bar and the number of notifications in the taskbar, and if you are unlucky enough to still have the default setting uses Windows 11 UI, labels have been added to the file explorer.

Microsoft warns that some of these features won’t be available to all Insiders at this time, prioritizing the Canary and Dev channels, and that the installation itself could fail if users don’t use Windows Update, or even be forced to nevertheless reverse. .
