Microsoft has rolled out a new update for its Edge browser, which adds a host of security and stability fixes in addition to a dedicated internet speed test.
As noted by Tech spotMicrosoft Edge browser update version 124.0.2478.80 has introduced a new internet speed test built into the sidebar, as well as fixes aimed at closing a number of glaring security vulnerabilities highlighted by the community from a previous update.
It’s worth noting that Edge had a built-in speed tester, much like Google Chrome does now, but this was removed for about a year before being re-implemented in the sidebar alongside a redesigned world clock, units converter, translator, dictionary and calculator all available shorthand. While far from exciting, it certainly sounds useful.
You can use the new sidebar feature from the Red Toolbox, as found at the top right corner, which will bring the newly refreshed items into view. However, although the Internet Speed Test is accessed from this menu, it opens in a separate browser window and then gives you the upload and download score.
The new feature is yet another reason why many think Microsoft Edge is better than Google Chrome, despite the latter’s popularity. Google still remains the preferred choice despite the progress made by Microsoft’s built-in Windows browser, which comes pre-installed with every copy of Windows 11, but Microsoft continues to try to innovate its way to wider popularity (as well as a shameless plea to stick with its browser as your default).
Another step towards a definitive web browser
While Microsoft Edge may not have the same level of fame and success as Google Chrome, a steady series of updates and innovations like these could be enough to turn the tide.
Edge has lower power consumption overall and, most importantly, goes easier on your RAM compared to Google Chrome at the same stress level.
Still, it has struggled to gain traction as people’s favorite web browser, but constantly rolling out new developments like this built-in internet speed test is certainly one way to convince people of a browser’s superior functionality.
