Micron’s next high-powered SSD could fit in your laptop

Micron has announced its latest 9400 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD set to deliver what the company says is an industry-leading 30.72 TB of storage capacity.

Micron says its 9400 solid-state drive is now available “designed to manage the most demanding data center workloads,” and lends itself well to artificial intelligence, machine learning and other high-performance computing applications.

“With its industry-leading 30 TB capacity and amazing performance with over 1 million IOPS in mixed workloads, the Micron 9400 SSD can pack larger datasets into any server and accelerate machine learning training, helping users get more out of their GPUs,” noted on VP for Micron, Alvaro Toledo.

IOPS per watt would have seen a whopping 77% improvement, while the 30TB SSD effectively doubles the capacity of Micron’s previous generation NVMe SSDs. This results in a standard server with two rack units and 24 drives fully equipped with Micron’s 9400 SSDs providing a total storage space of 737TB.

Naturally, this development will see the potential for a significant reduction in the footprint required in data centers compared to other similar setups, reducing the environmental impact of storing our data. Micron also promises that this will help companies reduce their maintenance costs.

The Micron 9400 NVMe SSD is available today in 6.4 TB, 7.68 TB, 12.8 TB, 15.36 TB, 25.6 TB and 30.72 TB sizes and is ready for U.3 sockets and U.2 backward compatibility.

Despite the apparent availability, Micron has not yet released details about the price of its new release.
