Michigan State University suspends all on-campus athletic events and activities through Wednesday

Michigan State University has announced that all sporting events, along with classes and any other activities on campus will be suspended for the next two days, following a shooting on campus Monday night.
The Michigan State men’s basketball team would take on Minnesota on Wednesday, while the women’s team would visit Purdue. The men’s tennis team also faced Drake.
The Spartans also had events scheduled for Friday in baseball, boys’ ice hockey, wrestling, softball, girls’ gymnastics, boys’ tennis and girls’ tennis, but the school has yet to make an announcement about those games.
All campus activities are canceled for 48 hours, including sports, classes, and all campus related activities. Please DO NOT come to campus tomorrow.’
Just before 8:30 p.m., shootings broke out at an academic building and also near the school’s student union, a popular gathering place, said Chris Rozman, acting deputy chief of the campus police department.

Shortly after the shooting, the university posted the following alert at the top of its website:
MSU Police report that a shooting has occurred on the East Lansing campus. This is an active and ongoing situation. Secure in place immediately. Run-hide-fight. Running means getting away from danger if you can do it safely, Hide means staying safely in place, and Fighting means protecting yourself if there is no other option.’
As of the last update on Monday night, three people were declared dead and five injured.
Rozman said the incident began at 8:18 p.m. in Berkey Hall on campus.
“We were quickly on the scene, in a matter of minutes, and there we located several victims of a shooting.
“The incident was moved to a very nearby building: the Michigan State Union building, where there was another report of a shooting immediately following the first incident report.”
Rozman said there was “an overwhelming police response” to the shooting.
He said there was a suspect and he was “last seen leaving MSU Union on foot on the north side of that building.”
The shooting comes on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Valentine’s Day shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

Students are told to shelter in place while the shooter remains at large on campus.

Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan, tweeted: “I was informed about the shooting at Michigan State University.
‘Michigan State Police along with @MSUPolice, local police and first responders are on the ground.
Let’s embrace the Spartan community tonight.
“We will keep everyone updated as we learn more.”
Gary Peters, a senator representing Michigan, said: “My staff and I are closely following the horrific shooting at Michigan State University and are in contact with local officials.”
“I urge students and the East Lansing community to stay safe and follow instructions from law enforcement.”
East Lansing Public Schools has notified parents of students that K-12 schools in the district will be closed Tuesday while the shooting situation at Michigan State University is assessed.
The university itself has also canceled all classes.
Michigan State University is located in East Lansing, three miles east of the Michigan Capitol in Lansing.
Home to 50,000 students, it is located on one of the largest and greenest campuses in the nation, spread over 5,200 acres.
