Michigan State displayed the image of Adolf Hitler as part of a pregame quiz on video boards before playing No. 2 Michigan on Saturday night.
Hitler’s image was shown as part of a trivia question about his hometown before kick-off against their domestic rival.
Hitler and Austria, his birthplace, flashed on the video boards long enough for some to share on social media what some fans had seen more than an hour before kickoff.
The school later apologized for the inappropriate content from an external source.
“MSU is aware that inappropriate content from a third party was displayed on the video board prior to the start of tonight’s football game,” Michigan State spokesman Matt Larson said.

“We deeply regret the content shown as it is not representative of our institutional values. MSU will not use the third-party source in the future and will implement more stringent screening and approval procedures for all videoboard content in the future.”
The pregame quiz provides content well before the games on video boards. No other quizzes were displayed on the screen.
Michigan defeated Michigan State on the field, a year after the tunnel fight in which several Spartans abandoned their rivals after last year’s loss, leading to their suspension.
JJ McCarthy passed for 287 yards and a career-high four touchdowns and No. 2 Michigan crushed rival Michigan State 49-0 on Saturday night in East Lansing.
McCarthy completed 21 of 27 passes as the Wolverines defeated the Spartans for the second straight season.
AJ Barner caught eight passes for 99 yards for Michigan (8-0 overall, 5-0 Big Ten). Colston Loveland caught four passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns, while Blake Corum rushed for 59 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown.
Katin Houser completed 12 of 22 passes for 101 yards and was picked off once for Michigan State (2-5, 0-4), which has dropped five in a row. Nate Carter was held to 36 yards on 17 carries. The Spartans were eliminated by the Wolverines for the first time since 2000.
McCarthy passed for 276 yards and three touchdowns as the Wolverines rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead.

The game came a year later after the tunnel battles when several Spartans took on their rivals
Michigan’s first possession was an 84-yard drive capped by Corum’s 1-yard run. The big play was a 25-yard pass from McCarthy to Roman Wilson.
The Spartans failed to convert on fourth down from midfield, and Michigan drove 51 yards for its next touchdown. McCarthy capped it off with a 25-yard scoring strike to Wilson.
Michigan’s third possession lasted 11 plays and 66 yards. McCarthy finished it off when he found Loveland on a 22-yard pass play.
This was repeated later in the second quarter when the same combination connected 22 meters away. Loveland and Barner, the team’s tight ends, combined for 11 receptions and 167 yards in the first half.
After three quarters it was 42-0.
The Wolverines’ defense provided the next score in the third quarter. Mike Sainristil picked off a Houser pass near the Michigan sideline and raced 72 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-0.
A trio of Spartan penalties helped the Wolverines on their next scoring drive. McCarthy finished it off with an 11-yard pass to Barner.
Alex Orji’s six-yard run in the final seconds completed the scoring.
