Michigan State freshman guard Jeremy Fears shot in the leg while visiting hometown… and is now ‘resting comfortably’ after surgery

Michigan State University point guard Jeremy Fears was shot in the leg near his hometown of Joliet, Illinois, according to his report Detroit Free Press reporter Chris Solari.

The injury is not considered life-threatening.

MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo told Solari, “Jeremy had surgery this morning and is now resting comfortably.

“While there is much we still don't know, my focus is on supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.”

A message left by DailyMail.com to Joliet police seeking more information was not immediately returned.

Fears has played in all 12 of Michigan State's games this season – averaging 3.5 points, 3.3 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game.

In the last game played before MSU went on Christmas break, he recorded a career-high 10 assists while also grabbing five rebounds in a 99-55 win over Stony Brook.

Fears committed to the Spartans as a five-star recruit and was rated by ESPN as the 27th-best player in the country, the second-best player in Illinois and the ninth-best point guard in the class of 2023.

Michigan State's next game is December 30 against Indiana State.
