McCarthy was among the first-round candidates who opted to stay away from Detroit and celebrate at home on Thursday night.

He planned to be surrounded by 100 people — including family members, Illinois friends, teammates and football program staffers — near the airport, about halfway between Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the draft site.

“I didn’t want to go to Detroit because I know it took a village to get me here, and I want to celebrate with them,” McCarthy told WXYZ-TV.

For Minnesota, the pick represents a new era at quarterback.

The Vikings were manned by Kirk Cousins for six seasons before he signed with the Falcons this offseason.

However, Cousins may have been surprised when his new team co-quarterback Michael Penix Jr. selected at number 8 overall.
