Michigan promotes Sherrone Moore to become their new head coach as Wolverines’ OC replaces Jim Harbaugh after he left for the Los Angeles Chargers

Michigan has announced Sherrone Moore as its next football coach following the departure of Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers.

Moore, 37, was the team’s offensive coordinator and coach when it won the national championship last season.

And after confirming Harbaugh’s return to the NFL on Wednesday, Michigan waited just two days to promote Moore.

“I have prepared my entire coaching career for this opportunity and I can’t think of a better place to be a head coach than at the University of Michigan,” Moore said in a statement. “We will do everything we can as a TEAM every day to continue the legacy of championship football played in Michigan for the past 144 years.

“Our standards will not change. We will be a smart, tough, reliable, ruthless and enthusiastic team at a championship level that loves football and plays with a passion for the game, the winged helmet and each other.”

The school shared a video of Moore reading a tweet with the news as he responded with Michigan’s signature slogan“Go blue.”

Moore served as head coach for four games last season after Harbaugh was suspended due to the school’s sign-stealing scandal.

He is the 21st head coach in school history.

Athletic director Warde Manuel added, “Sherrone has proven to be a great leader for our football program, especially the offensive line and players on the offensive side of the football. He is a dynamic, fierce and competitive person who gets the best out of the players he coaches. The players love playing for him and being in the building with him every day.”

Moore, a former offensive lineman at Oklahoma, arrived at Michigan in 2018 after coaching stints at Louisville and Central Michigan.

He started as the Wolverines’ tight ends coach before climbing the ladder and eventually earning play-calling duties.
