Athletic director Warde Manuel announced the news Friday, saying Weiss was fired “following a review of university policies.”

“I have nothing but respect for the University of Michigan and the people who make it a great place,” Weiss said. “I hope to put this matter behind me and get back to concentrating on the game I love.”

As the Detroit News reported, Weiss’s home in Ann Arbor, Michigan was searched by police on January 10. He has not been charged with any crime and claims to be cooperating with police investigations.

Weiss was hired two years earlier by head coach Jim Harbaugh, who promoted the 39-year-old Connecticut native to co-offensive coordinator in 2022. Weiss shared playcalling duties with Sherrone Moore.

Previously, Weiss worked with Harbaugh’s brother, Baltimore Ravens head coach John, in various assistant coaching positions for the NFL club.

Weiss was a punter at Vanderbilt, where he played from 2001 to 2003.

Michigan went nearly undefeated with Weiss calling at least a portion of the offensive plays, while quarterback JJ McCarthy was ranked 23rd in the country in quarterback rating. The Wolverines’ season ended with a loss in the college football playoff semifinals to TCU, but Michigan beat rival Ohio State for the second time with Weiss on the staff.
