Michigan supporters toasted the first national championship since 1997 by taking to the streets, burning benches and singing Mr. Brightside in Ann Arbor.

Jim Harbaugh's players, meanwhile, celebrated their win over Washington by taking home National Championship seats from NRG Stadium.

The Wolverines were crowned the best team in college football Monday night after defeating the Huskies 34-13 in Houston.

Shortly after the final whistle, clips emerged on social media of wild celebrations both in the stadium and on campus.

One video showed a large crowd gathered around a couch, with fans filming on their phones as a student wearing Michican merchandise set the furniture on fire.

“It's Awesome To Be A Michigan Wolverine!” the fans sang before the cheers went up as the bench went up in flames.

The furniture was then turned over, causing panic among some at the front of the crowd.

At the nearby Crisler Center, Michigan hosted a free student-only viewing party for Monday's game. Clips from during the game showed fans in the stands celebrating a Wolverines touchdown as the action played out on the big screens.

Later, however, the crowd had descended on the field and were singing the team's unofficial anthem, 'Mr Brightside' by The Killers.

Outside on the streets in Ann Arbor, supporters gathered late into the night, taking photos of them climbing trees — and even carrying them — after the victory.

Back in Houston, some Michigan players left NRG Stadium with leather seats that read: “National Championship.”

“We have a chair, honey!” someone shouted before adding, “And I think we won the 'Natty' too!”
