A camouflaged man shot at four Michigan police cars before setting them on fire in the early morning and fleeing the scene — sparking a hunt for the suspect.

The curious attack was carried out at around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at a Michigan State Police station. The suspect discharged several rifle rounds into vacant cars at the Sault Ste. Marie Post, located off I-75 Business Spur near 3 Mile Road.

He then set fire to the vehicles, then got into a silver Honda CRV and left.

No soldiers were injured when the cars were ambushed, but the arson attack destroyed three vehicles.

“Four patrol vehicles were damaged, three of which were totally lost,” said Lieutenant Mark Giannunzio, public information officer for the Eighth District of the Michigan State Police.

Surveillance footage captured the moment when one of the police cars caught fire and crashed into a wall of flame that engulfed the neighboring vehicle

The cars were set on fire as they pulled up outside the Sault Ste. Marie message. The small city is located on the northeastern tip of the state’s Upper Peninsula, about a five-hour drive from Detroit

Lieutenant Mark Giannunzio told MailOnline.com that police had not yet determined a motive and were still on the hunt for the suspect as of early Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the post would remain closed on Wednesday.

“We are still looking for the suspect and looking for clues,” Giannunzio told MailOnline.com. “No motive has been identified.”

The lieutenant added that the agency would release further information if possible.

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. He was last seen heading south on the I-75 Business Loop.

MSP Eighth District has released grainy footage of the man, taken on a surveillance camera. He was described as a white man dressed in camouflage.

Saul Ste. Marie is located on the northeastern tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It is about 350 miles from Detroit and an hour’s drive from three of the Great Lakes.

According to US Census Bureau data, the population estimate for July 2022 was just over 13,000 people.
