Michelle Yeoh Boldly Takes Off in Star Trek: Section 31 SDCC Trailer
Star Trek: Discovery’s place in history will forever be debated, but here’s one fact: It ushered in a promising new era of Trek spinoffs, complete with a wacky star vehicle for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Everything Everywhere All At Once star Michelle Yeoh. The Oscar-winning actress stepped out at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 to debut the trailer for her new film, Star Trek: Section 31, which sees her Discovery character, Philippa Georgiou (the mirror universe warlord) return to the fringes of Federation activity as part of a “secret division” of the Federation, according to the official Paramount Plus announcement.
First announced in April 2023, Article 31 was originally developed as a spin-off series, but at some point — perhaps after a Best Actress Oscar? — Paramount ultimately decided that a one-off film was the best way to continue her character’s story.Article 31 “She has been dear to my heart since I first started playing Philippa, way back when this new golden age of Star Trek was beginning,” Yeoh said in the original announcement. “That she’s finally getting her moment is a dream come true in a year that has shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams.”
Philippa is also living a version of the dream in the SDCC trailer, laughing off mentions of her past crimes, sporting glamorous looks, and kicking ass as a trailercore remix of Beyoncé’s “Formation” plays. She may be confronting the sins of her past as she officially joins the Federation, but she’s having a damn good time doing it.
The film was written by Discovery veterinarian Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, who collaborated with Yeoh on Disco season 1. Besides Yeoh, Article 31 will also star Omari Hardwick (Current), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Sam Richardson (I think you should leave), and more. Also announced at SDCC was Miku Martineau as Young Georgiou, who you can see at the beginning of the trailer.
Section 31 is currently scheduled to premiere on Paramount Plus in early 2025. And there’s more Trek to come, with Strange New Worlds season 3 in the making and a new spin-off, Starfleet Academycurrently filming.
